FIRST PRODUCT & PROOF OF CONCEPT

It took countless rounds of testing; varying factors like temperature, speed of rotation, plastic flake size, and molding time. But finally, we succeeded in making our first ever proof of concept and product.

At our MicroFactory on Governors Island, NYC, witness the post-consumer single-use plastic enter our solar-powered shredder, the plastic flakes be placed into the mold, and watch the rotational molding machine work its solar-powered magic. After about 20 minutes, we’ll open up the mold and you’ll see a freshly made Globe.

The globe is a cautionary tale depicting where sea levels will rise to if we continue melting all of the worlds ice.

FILM CANISTER RECYCLING

NYC recycles 1,000 tons a day through SIMS recycling in Sunset Park Brooklyn. That SIMS plant is the largest recycler in the world and they do an amazing job. Unfortunately, most small items are screened out. Anything that can fall through a 2” square hole, such as pill bottles, cosmetic containers, bottle caps, and film canisters all end up in a landfill. We have been collecting film canisters from around NYC, bringing them to our MicroFactory, shredding them, and molding them into Globes. The results have been is amazing! So film photography fanatics and sustainability champions alike come visit us on Governors Island bring us your unwanted film canisters!

HOW IT’S MADE

1. Solar power is collected and stored in a battery bank

2. Single-use, recycled plastic is washed and then broken down in a solar-powered shredder

2. Heat, melt, and rotate shredded plastic flakes using our yellow Rotomold Machine

3. Let mold cool and then retrieve the multicolored globe product

CAUTIONARY COASTLINES

Our educational globe is a representation of this digital 3D model that we created. It demonstrates where sea levels will rise to if we continue following a Linear Economy lifestyle. As you can see, large stretches of land disappear across the world.
